Why Kenyans Expect Little From This Year’s Labour Day

Kenyans are set to mark this year’s Labour Day celebration tomorrow on May 1, 2019, and Kenyans don’t expect a lot from the celebration.

Labour Day is always a day set aside to specifically recognize the struggles made by workers to enhance the economic growth of the nation.

Many workers are expectant to hear the address of their plight- minimum wage increase, health and safety.

However, over the years, this has changed in Kenya. The celebrations are manipulated by politicians and workers end up not getting their rights.

In as much as we enjoy some political calm in the country right now, some traces of politics still exist and Kenyans still do not believe that tomorrow’s celebration is going to be purely for workers.

With the Central Organization Trade Union (COTU) Boss Francis Atwoli’s recent remarks about Deputy President William Ruto, Kenyans do not hope for a better speech from him tomorrow apart from attacking Ruto.

The situation has put workers under great risk as their day which began back in 1880 in good faith to address their plight has turned to be a political rally.
