We all know of the common “P2” Pill by now, especially in this generation of young guys having sex everywhere..
The “morning after pill”, is a common request in pharmacies, especially when you’ve had unplanned or unprotected sex. It’s however alarming that these consumers don’t know much about it except for popping this emergency contraceptive pill and going about their day.
1. It will only work for sex that occurred in the previous five days.
Even though emergency contraception is often called the “morning-after pill” or “day after pill,” it may be effective for up to 72 hours.
2. It is not recommended as a regular method of contraception.
This is an emergency contraceptive, it doesn’t replace regular contraceptives. If you’re looking for long-term methods, this isn’t it.
3. Unlike condoms, it does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Postinor-2 is only a contraceptive; an immediate preventive measure of reducing the chances of getting pregnant. As effective as this pill is, it doesn’t prevent one from being infected with viral diseases.
4. It may have some side effects, such as bleeding, nausea and fatigue.
Just like every contraceptive, they have side effects that affect everyone differently, but these are the main side effects. So be careful not to add on extra medications.
5. It isn’t 100% effective.
There are two factors that influence its effectiveness: the amount of time since unprotected sex, and the point in a woman’s cycle at which she had sex.
So next time you pop these pills, be mindful of what exactly is going down your throat before popping a baby nine months down the line.
