Forget Smalling, Here are Liverpool Players Who Will Deal With Messi Accordingly

Lionel Messi is admittedly the driving force in Barcelona and has been a scare for every team that is about to meet the Spain Champions.

It is always interesting to see how clubs re-align themselves just to stop Messi from invading their goal.

In most occasions, Messi has proven to be lethal at the goal area and has punished opponents.

The latest to feel the heat of the Argentinian is Manchester United, who were thrashed 3-0 by Barcelona with two goals coming from the five times Ballon d’Or winner.

But Liverpool seems to be no pushovers and boast a significantly better defensive record in the Premier League compared to United. As things stand, Liverpool have only conceded 20 goals compared to the Red Devils’ 50, according to ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy.

“I don’t want to tempt fate but I think Liverpool are better equipped to deal with Lionel Messi than Manchester United were at the Nou Camp,” he said.

“They have to be concerned about Barcelona’s wizard, of course, but not obsessively so. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jurgen Klopp spends as much time working out how to deal with the runs from Jordi Alba at left-back.

“If Alba and Philippe Coutinho are allowed to go two-against-one with Trent Alexander-Arnold isolated, that does spell danger for Liverpool.

“Stopping Messi isn’t simple but if you’re looking for a midfield three to do the job, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Gino Wijnaldum would be near the top of the list.”

Liverpool will head to Nou Camp on Wednesday for their semi-final clash with Barcelona.
