Distressed 2008 1500m Olympic champion Asbel Kiprop felt cheated the moment DP Ruto threw him under the bus after testing positive for a banned substance.
A tweet from February 2019 indicates how Deputy President William Ruto distanced himself from the Asbel Kiprop’s challenges at the time.
The athlete, who expressed suicidal thoughts on Saturday, has since surrendered to Police over his racy statements.
The athlete who lost the case despite hiring one of the best lawyers in Kenya has been a disappointed man after the DP Ruto’s slur.
To add insult to injury, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Logistics and Functions, Mr Joseph Kiget warned the athlete on his statements, saying stern disciplinary actions will be administered on him.
“We don’t condone such behaviour from our officers. Channels of addressing personal grievances are provided in the NPS rules and regulations and firm administrative action will be taken,” said Mr Kiget.
This brought to the fore a battle that could have been going on for some time now between the athlete and the authorities.
In his statements, DP Ruto noted that the athletes who were doping were not only staining their individual reputation and that of the country at large.
Kiprop is believed to have sunk deeper into depression at the time.
The champion had also been recovering from allegations of extra-marital affairs with the wife of one of his trainers.
A video surfaced online showing the athlete in a compromising position with a female in his car.
The allegations cost the athlete his family after his wife with whom they have two kids fled after the damning video got to her.
