Chicago marathon champion Brigid Kosgei outshined second placed Kenyan counterpart and defending champions Vivian Cheruiyot to claim her first London Marathon title in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon.

She led four other Kenyans to claim top places with the only Ethiopian coming third in the race.

Vivian Cheruiyot lost her pace from the leading pack where she was leading but dropped out slowly as the run entered the last miles to fellow Kenyan athlete Kosgei lead solo.

Her Kenyan compatriot took control of the last miles of the marathon for the better part of the last stretches putting a very good and safe distance between the two champions all the way.

The 25 years old was in good shape all along showing all the energy and confidence as she cruised through the streets of London s the crowd shouted to cheer her on.

She won it ahead of her Kenyan trio of the defending Champion Cheruiyot and Mary Keitany with a gap of close to two minutes which was not bad for a defending champion.

Although she did not break the world record, she registered her best run in the marathon putting the best time of 2:18:20
