Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders has lauded the abilities of the Reds’ record-signing Virgil van Dijk by praising his command on and off the ball.

Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton for a club-record fee last season, has been widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world since then.

Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton for a club-record fee last season, has been widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the world since then.

The Dutchman helped the Reds to the Champions League final last season and has been the cornerstone during their rise to prominence in the Premier League this term.

Jurgen Klopp’s men, who are in contention to lift their first league title since 1990, have conceded the least amount of goals in the division so far this season and have also booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

And as a testament to his impressive displays for the club, Van Dijk is believed to be the front-runner for the PFA Player of the Year award in England.

As such, Lijnders has lauded the abilities of Van Dijk by admitting he is an invaluable asset to have due to his capabilities in the air and the ability to play out from the back.

The Reds coach also admitted Van Dijk gives the team an opportunity to play further away from their goal and touched on his brilliant dribbling and keen eye for pass with the ball at his feet.

“He gives us the opportunity to play further from our goal and is very valuable in defending balls in the air”, Lijnders told Dutch magazine Voetbal International.

“He is also fantastic on the ball: playing hard on the ground, dribbling and a good pass to switch play.

“He is there every time.”

Liverpool are in action against Huddersfield Town in the Premier League at Anfield this evening.
