Lawyer Assa Nyakundi To Spend A Night In Remand

Lawyer Assa Nyakundi’s case who allegedly shot his 29-year-old son dead in March will be detained at Muthaiga police station for one day.

The lawyer, who was discharged from hospital on Tuesday, is now expected to be presented in court on Friday at noon.

Police moved to Makandara lawcourt asking for more time to detain Nyakundi to give them quality time for investigations.

On Thursday, Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga issued a directive granting police more time to finalize their case since the accused has been in the hospital for six weeks.

“Since the matter is of public interest, I allow the prosecution’s application to complete their investigations,” ruled Magistrate Nyaga.

The new Investigating Officer, Oliver Nabonywe, had requested for one day to be able to get Nyakundi’s fingerprints, visit the scene of the crime and interrogate him further on the matter.

The accused had told police he was trying to holster his firearm while in the car when he accidentally fired, shooting his son in the chest, but the investigations carried out on the crime scene and autopsy revealed that the shooting was done from outside.

“The shot projection from the chest exiting at the back suggested that whoever shot him was standing outside the rear right back door of motor vehicle KCE 753B Toyota Axio which belongs to the father of deceased,” read the autopsy report

“The angle of shooting according to the projection could be ninety degrees, suggesting there was a confrontation.”

Nyakundi’s son was buried on April 2 at the Lang’ata Cemetery.
