Instagram is considering hiding likes in a bid to reduce social media pressure. If the idea is implemented, so that users can’t see how many people have liked an individual post.

“We want your followers to focus on what you share; not how many likes your posts get. During this test, only the person who shares a post will see the total number of likes it gets” said Instagram.

Hiding Like counts could reduce herd-mentality, where people just like what their friends and people they know have already liked or a post that has very many likes.

It could also reduce the sense of competition on Instagram since users won’t compare their own counts with those of more popular friends or their competitor content-creators.

With the new feature, Instagram hopes to encourage content creators to post what feels most authentic rather than trying to rack up likes for everyone to see.

This testing in design change was discovered by Jane Manchun Wong, a prominent reverse-engineering expert who has uncovered many of Instagram’s planned features before they were announced or launched.

Wong spotted the changes in the Instagram Android code base and posted the following on her twitter handle.

For most of us, hidden likes could provide some peace of mind because we will no longer obsessively check our phones for notifications after a post, or lamenting that not enough of our followers appreciate our internet presence.

However, for those whose careers are dependent on how many followers they have and how many likes they get on their posts, the change could transform how Instagram Influencers measure their value to brands.

For many influencers on Instagram, the more engagement (Likes) you have on a post, the higher the chance of you getting more sponsorships and collaborations.

Even so, while your followers can’t see how many likes you have on your post, you will still receive notifications on the users that liked your post and the number of likes on your post
