‘When I decide to do something I give my all!’ Magoha warns Sossion as crisis looms

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Tuesady launched the April Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) training for 91,000 teachers and vowed there will be no going back on its implementation.

He indicated that by September this year, a clear masterplan for rolling out CBC in Grade 4 in 2020 will be ready.

This came as Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) called for a boycott of the training.

According to KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion, the government has not done sufficient sensitisation among the key education stakeholders.

Sossion termed the training as “a violation of the law”.

Some of the issues cited by the union against the new curriculum include: rushed implementation, lack of support in monitoring books, inadequate infrastructure due to extremely high enrolment and failure to involve the participation of private schools in the training.

In Kakamega, a few KNUT officials were locked up for attempting to disrupt training.

However, Prof Magoha has remained bullish and said the rollout of the new curriculum will continue despite opposition from KNUT.

“When I decide to do something, I shall do it with all the energy that I have if I believe it is the right thing to do. Let us stop wasting time and concentrate on the goal; the goal is CBC,” Magoha said.

Treasury has already disbursed Ksh.500million to facilitate the training in April this year.

“I have been to the ground, because I do not believe in reports, and what I noticed is that we have some of the best teachers in this country,” he added.

The new curriculum is expected to focus less on content and more on acquisition of competencies that can help you do something for yourself
