Swazuri cash bail overtakes Samburu governors Ksh 10m as corruption war intensifies

Former land commission chairman Muhammad Swazuri and 10 other people have been relieved from eating sukumawiki and Ugali after spending the weekend praising the Lord for dying for their sins in police cells.

As the war on corruption intensifies, Swazuri and the 10 co-accused founded themselves cooling their heels in a police cell after they were found guilty of 20 counts including corruption, abuse of office, financial misconduct, fraudulent acquisition of public funds and money laundering.

Swazuri was granted an Sh12m cash bail after spending Easter holiday in custody while the 10 co-accused in NLC graft case was released on varying bond terms.

However, Swazuris’ cash bail is by Ksh 2 million higher from Samburu governor’s who was slapped with a Ksh 10 m cash bail.

Samburu Governor Moses Kasaine was arrested over Sh84-million-fuel-supply scandal involving his county government.

Mr Lenolkulal had spent a night in remand prison after failing to pay an initial amount worth Sh100 million cash bail imposed on him by anti-corruption magistrate Douglas Ogoti before it was reduced to Ksh 10m.

As for the Swazuri team, other suspects are Francis Mugo, the director of finance and administration at NLC, businessman Samuel Rugongo, Godfrey Muritu, Evahmary Wachera, Michael Oloo and an advocate Catherine Wanjiru.

They are accused jointly of conspiring to commit corruption through the fraudulent payment of Sh109 million for alleged compulsory acquisition of land from Tornado carriers on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority.

The land was for the construction of the Mombasa Southern Bypass and Kipevu New Highway Container Terminal link road.

Prof Swazuri also denies abuse of office charges. He is alleged to have approved a second valuation of Sh109 million as compensation for the land initially valued at Sh34.5 million.
