In a recent interview with a local TV station, Deputy President William Ruto alleged that Opposition leader Raila Odinga had approached him four times before the March 9, 2018 Handshake between the latter and President Uhuru Kenyatta. With those remarks, Ruto opened a can of worms.

The DP further claimed that convinced that Raila’s overtures were not in good faith, he turned them and reported the matter to the President.

In a rejoinder, ODM party through its secretary general, Edwin Sifuna, issued a strongly-worded statement calling out Ruto, whom they described as “a high priest of corruption”. The statement further alleged it was Ruto who approached Raila allegedly with a view to working together to sabotage Uhuru. It appears Ruto feels betrayed by his boss for agreeing to work with Raila.

With this virulent war of words between the two political camps, the flipside of the celebrated Handshake is slowly crystallising from the mist—the truce was politically motivated.

At the heart of the bitter exchange is the 2022 presidential election. Even at a time when the nation is seeking to build bridges and cement relations, the two political heavyweights are going for each other’s jugular, with each out to demolish the other before the appointed date.

In all this, Ruto has been communicating to the Mt Kenya voting bloc that he has been nothing but a loyal deputy, apparently betrayed by his boss.

Raila on the other hand portrays himself as a man invited by the President to help manage his apparently, overly ambitious deputy.

While the truth on behind-the-curtains machinations that preceded the Handshake remain elusive, all manner of speculations will keep being peddled by Kenyans and Politicians.
