Fishermen at Kiumba Beach, Homabay County were left in shock after they discovered three rusty explosives believed to be from the colonial period.

The fishermen discovered the explosives hidden in an old metallic box at Lake Victoria.

According to Kiumba Beach management Unit Chairman (BMU) Samuel Odira Osewe, the fishermen pulled out the wooden box thinking they had landed a huge catch of fish.

The third explosive was reportedly discovered floating at the shore of the lake.

They notified officers from Mbita Police Station who took custody of the explosives.

While speaking to the local media, Homa Bay County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Daniel Wachira said the bombs are suspected to have been dropped at the lake by colonial fighters.

He said that bomb experts from Kisumu County will examine them before determining what to do.

In February this year, Police recovered 152 Colonial-era bombs at a hardware shop in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.

The bombs according to the shop owner were being handled as scrap metal and were yet to be bought.

Kipkeu has now appealed to the public to report anything they come across as suspicious be it an activity or individual.

Back in 2013, 60 millimetres and 2 inches high explosive bombs were discovered in Nyeri by a farmer who was tending his farm.

The bombs were suspected to have been left there by the colonialists during the war for independence with Mau Mau freedom fighters.

“The children thought it was a scrap metal. We informed the police who collected it.

This is not the first bomb to be found here. This was a military training ground during the colonial period,” the area chief said then.
