Fresh details emerge about police who shot himself and woman at Likoni bar

Details have emerged about high ranking Mombasa police inspector Joab Omondi Mwanza, who killed a female ‘friend’ he was with at a bar in Likoni, and thereafter killed himself.

Inspector Joab reportedly owed the National Police Service Sacco Society Sh800,000.

According to a Standard report, he had also been job hunting in different local and international organizations at the time of his death.

His corpse was found next to the woman, Peninah Kaimenyi, who he allegedly shot on the forehead.

Multiple sources who knew both individuals said that the dead woman was not a stranger to Joab because they had been seen together on several occasion.

At the same time, Peninah Kaimenyi is an ex-wife to a Kenya Defence Forces soldier at the Mtongwe Naval Base, with whom they had two children.

Curiously, Joab was still living in the police quarters despite police standing orders that officers above the rank of inspector should not stay within the station or police camp.

Police sources said it was not clear what the money Omondi had gotten from the Sacco had been spent on. They also said the inspector was respected by his juniors because he often sought their opinion before acting on some issues.

“He would call junior officers to consult on some things – even on matters where he was supposed to act individually as his rank allows,” one source revealed.
