Saturday 20th April 2019 marked exactly one year since former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger announced that he will be departing the role he has held for 22 years once the season ended. It was a move that was not expected by many and was met with widespread shock across the Arsenal fanbase.

A month later, Arsenal appointed former PSG manager Unai Emery as the man to replace the Frenchman and immediately tasked with the job of getting Arsenal back into the Champions League. Under Arsene Wenger, Arsenal failed to make the Champions League for two seasons in a row and was completely off the pace as compared to other top 4 clubs in the English Premier League.

Unai Emery came in and started the season in the worst possible fashion, losing his first two games against Manchester City at the Emirates and London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Some Arsenal fans were already calling for his sacking after those two games but the Spaniard held his own and Arsenal went on a 22 match unbeaten run that propelled them back into the top 4 positions.

Though the defense has still proved to be a problem as well as the away form, the Gunners are in a very good position to finish in the top four and are in the Europa League semifinals. Unai Emery has also improved Arsenal’s results against the top six sides.

Last season Arsenal only beat Spurs in the league while this season, they have beaten Spurs, Manchester United and Chelsea in the league. They have only lost once at home which was against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Impressive stuff all around.

When you consider the struggles most teams go through when in a transition period, case in point being Manchester United, Unai Emery has done a good job in his first season filling in Arsene Wenger’s shoes. He is yet to come into grips with the English language and most of the players are still adapting to his methods. Arsenal were unsure of where to head once Wenger was gone but on the basis of how the season has panned out, so far so good!
