Lionel Messi wins Champions League Award for his display against Man United.

Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi has this morning been named as the UEFA Champions League Player of the Week.

Barcelona 3-0 Man United

Messi’s Barca welcomed Premier League giants Manchester United to the Camp Nou this past Tuesday night, for the second-leg of the high-profile Champions League quarter-final tie between the clubs.

The Blaugrana headed into proceedings as clear favourites to advance, having put United to the sword by a goal to nil in the tie’s opener at Old Trafford last week.

And, when all was said and done in Catalunya, book their spot in the Champions League’s final-4 was precisely what Ernesto Valverde’s men managed, in some style.

Lionel Messi proved the star of the show, bagging an early brace to put the tie firmly to bed as a contest.

The Argentine’s first came with a quarter of an hour on the clock, when Messi pounced upon an Ashley Young mistake to rifle home a trademark left-footed finish from the edge of the box:

The 31-year-old then went on to notch his brace just minutes later, albeit in slightly-less spectacular fashion.

Messi’s tame right-footed strike, again from just outside the box, somehow managed to squirm under the body of United shot-stopper David de Gea, in a real moment to forget for the Spaniard:

Philippe Coutinho rounded out the tie’s scoring with a stunning strike of his own on the hour mark.
