Musicians who have ditched music for politics

Over the years we have witnessed a number of popular musicians who have ditched their successful singing careers for politics not only in Kenya but also around the the world.

Here is a list of some musicians who ventured in politics from music.

Charles Kanyi Njagua A.K.A Jaguar

Hon. Jaguar started from a humble background having born and bred in Nairobi Kenya, he also worked as a tout in Nairobi’s Public Service Vehicles to afford school and other basic needs.

His big break was in 2004 when he released his first jam “Utaweza Kweli” under the Mandugu Digital record label. He later joined Ogopa Deejays in 2005 where he recorded and released several singles among them been “kigeugeu.” In 2013 Jaguar began recording with Main Switch Studios Founded by Jaguar’s one of the long-serving record producers, Philip Makanda formerly from Ogopa Deejays. He later joined politics in 2017 when he vied for the Starehe Parliamentary Seat and won

Bobi Wine

Bobi wine started his music career in 1999 with his first singles been  Akagoma, Funtula, and Sunda. He has recorded more than 70 songs over 15 years. In 2016, his song “Kiwani” was featured on the soundtrack for the Disney move Queen of Katwe a movie featuring Lupita Nyong’o. Just like Honourable Jaguar, he announced his candidacy for the Kyaddondo East Constituency a parliamentary seat in August 2017. His door-to-door walking campaign attracted attention both in Uganda and abroad. He won that contest by a wide margin, beating two seasoned candidates

In 2018, Robert Kyagulanyi gained increasing fame, championing the victories in most of the by-elections by the candidates he campaigned for, thus beating out the candidates of the political party in power, the National Resistance Movement, as well as the major opposition party, the Forum for Democratic Change.

Profesa Jay

Joseph Haule popularly known as Profesa Jay is a Tanzania bongo artist probably one of those who inspired the like of Diamond and Alikiba in Tanzania. He started rapping in 1994 as a member of the group Hard Blasters, best known for their hit “Chemsha Bongo” (then he used stage name Nigga J) from their first album, “Funga Kazi”. Only one year later, they won the title of best hip-hop group in Tanzania.

In 2015 Profesa Jay vied for Mikumi constituency parliamentary seat for CHADEMA during the Tanzanian general elections and won
