Deputy President William Ruto is the face behind the for the controversial housing levy tax that will subject Kenyans to a monthly 1.5% salary deduction.

This has been revealed by COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli. Atwoli, who has received a backlash for saying that Ruto will not be on the ballot in 2022 said that he advised the government not to implement the tax.

“I was at State house when they were discussing the idea and advised the government it will be difficult because Kenyans are broke,” Atwoli said.

In fact President Kenyatta listened to the veteran trade unionist had proposed a 0.5% levy but Ruto insisted on 1.5%

“The President wanted 0.5%, but his deputy wanted the infamous 1.5%,” he said during the burial of former COTU Secretary General Justus Mulei in Kitui.

The housing levy tax has been resisted by a majority of Kenyans with some people saying it is a conduit pipe to syphon public funds.

Kenyans are also questioning why a person living in the village, should contribute to development of a house in Nairobi.

It seems the DP was looking for more money to donate to the church.
