Kamket Rubishes Uhuru’s Housing Plan, Attacks Raila Indirectly

Controversial MP William Kamket has described President Uhuru Kenyatta’s plans to build houses for poor Kenyans as ‘hogwash’.

And in an apparent jab at ODM leader, Raila Odinga, Mr. Kamket argued that any government plans for housing must start with Kibera.

“If the government is serious about building houses for Kenyans, please start with Kibera,” he said on Twitter.

In the past, Mr Odinga and his key allies have seen any allusion to poverty and other problems as criticism of his long spell as area MP. Raila who served as Langata member of parliament which harbours the largest slum in the East and Central Africa, Kibera, has been in the past mocked by his political rivals for failing to develop the estate.

“Anything else is hogwash,” said the MP, who is a close ally of Baringo senator, Gideon Moi.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works directed employers to deduct 1.5 percent of staff salaries and remit them to KRA by  May 9.

Under the scheme, both the employer and employee shall each contribute 1.5 per cent of the employee’s monthly basic salary, if the sum of the total monthly contributions shall not exceed Sh5,000.

However, the FKE executive director Jacqueline Mugo on Tuesday said the organization obtained a court order on April 8 suspending implementation of the tax until the mention of the case on May 20.
