Former Man Utd star Paul Scholes Faces Punishment

Former Manchester United midfielder and Oldham FC manager Paul Scholes woes are far from ending after being found in the wrongdoing in breaking FA betting rules.

Just months after leaving his managerial role at Odham FC, his son was involved in a brawl with friends that saw him taken to court and now he is back on a different case.

Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association after breaking strict betting rules.

Manchester United legend Scholes, 44, has become the latest high profile star to fall foul of FA rules on gambling on football.

The FA has strict rules preventing players, managers, agents and anyone involved in the game on gambling on football.

It is believed that Scholes’ offence is more likely to result in a fine and warning rather than lengthy suspension.

The FA statement read: “Paul Scholes has been charged with misconduct in relation to the FA’s betting rules.

“It is alleged he placed 140 bets on football matches, contrary to FA Rule E8, between 17 August 2015 and 12 January 2019. He has until 26 April 2019 to respond to the charge.”

Scholes was most recently involved in football as manager of Oldham Athletic. Scholes lasted just 31 days as Oldham boss, taking charge of just seven matches before his exit on March 14.

Speaking on BT Sport at the weekend, Scholes shed some light on his reign, amid claims of interference from the club’s owner.

“I had heard loads of stories about interference and stuff,” declared the ex-Manchester United great.

“The first three weeks there was little bits. Not so much ‘leave him out, he can’t play, don’t play him, play the player I said’. There was nothing like that in the first three weeks.

“There were subtle hints, yeah of course, but I’m not stupid enough to not realise what they are trying to do. In the last week there was a couple of issues with a couple of players. Experienced pros that I felt didn’t deserve to be treated the way the club wanted to treat them.

“I didn’t need the hassle of that. I really like the players, really respected them and would have done anything for them. But once I get told ‘don’t play him’, that’s when it is time for me to go.

“That only happened once, but that was the end of it. There were subtle hints along the way, but that was the end of it.”

Former England star Scholes becomes the latest high-profile name to fall foul of the FA’s strict betting rules.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is currently awaiting the outcome of an FA investigation after a string of bets were placed on his loan move to West Brom last year.

Former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton was banned for 18 months in April after being charged with placing 1,260 bets on football matches or competitions from 2006 to 2016.

It was later reduced by five months while he also got a £30,000 fine.
