A Global Study on Homicide by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported that 19,000 women were killed in 2017 by their intimate partners in Africa.

The 2018/2019 report is projected to higher if any of the current news are anything to go by. The figure could even multiply should the unreported cases be documented.

While some Kenyans think being single could be the solution, others think that violence against women is a deeply-rooted culture in Africa that needs to be addressed through punitive government policy.

“We must agree that any kind of violence against or murder of women is criminal and punishable no matter the ongoings so as to discontinue the problematic justifications of gender violence, ” posits Scheaffer Okore, a Kenyan activist.

“It’s time to end the one-sided conversations as it’s undeniable that responsibility of women’s safety falls squarely in men’s hands,” she adds.

“This is evident in Kenya’s rising femicide cases, with the recent maddening murder of Ivy Wangechi.”

I’d rather be single, in a comfortable relationship with myself, than trapped in a dysfunctional, toxic relationship with someone else.
