KPLC Demolishes Hundreds of Buildings In Nairobi’s Njiru Area

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has demolished buildings in Njiru – Kirima area of Nairobi.The demolitions, christened ‘Ondokea Laini’, is said to be targeting at least 2000 buildings that have been built on power line reserves countrywide.

Landlords and tenants were given notices last December to demolished the buildings. They buildings were further marked and sensitizations done.‘Ondokea Laini’ is a multi-agency operation involving over 20 government agencies’, Geoffrey Kigen, KPLC Security Services Manager said.

The multiagency demolitions comprises; the Nairobi City County Government, the National Disaster Management Unit, the National Construction Authority, the National Environment Management Authority, Kenya Pipeline Corporation, the National Building Inspectorate, Kenya Railway Corporation, Water Resource Authority, the National Police Service ten others.

Though Kenya Power guidelines allow structures built 20 metres on either side of a 220kV power line and 15 metres on either side of a 132kV line,, there are thousands of buildings illegally built on wayleaves that stretch 5,300 kilometers countrywide.Here is the video and some photos from today’s demolitions.
