SAD News! How The Military Betrayed Sudanese People

“The Sudanese people didn’t take the streets for four months to replace a tyrant with another.”

This statement summarizes the current mood in Sudan after Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf was sworn in as head of the country’s transitional council on Thursday.

This came barely hours after the Military had toppled dictator Omar Al Bashir.

Al Bashir’s 30 year reign came to an end after public protests which have been going on for more than four months since December.

The Defence Minister, now interim President, announced that the military would be taking over for a two year transitional period.

“This is a recycled coup which will not be welcomed at all,” said Sara Abdelgalil, a spokeswoman for the Sudanese Professionals Association. She said Ibn Auf’s statement was “far from the expectations of the people of Sudan … which is the handover of power peacefully from the regime, unconditionally, and a civil transitional government.”

Alaa Salah, the 22 year old woman who has been seen as the face of the revolution said that people of Sudan “will only accept a transitional civilian government composed of the forces of the Declaration of Freedom and Change.”

Even though the Military has announced that the transitional unit can be disbanded sooner than the two year period, civilians are reading malice.

On Thursday, the public defied curfew orders and stayed at the Army Headquarters into the night demanding for a civilian government.

Thousands of people held prayers outside the military headquarters on Friday morning with calls for a civilian government dominating.

There are fears that things could escalate if this continues.
