Jubilation and ululation have marred Sudan capital Khartoum as thousands happy civilians stormed the streets of taking down posters bearing images of the ousted butcher of Darfur, President Omar al-Bashir Thursday.

The ex-president will remain under house arrest as military takes charge of the war-tone country.

On the other hand, Sudan’s Prime Minister Mohamed Taher Ayala and the head of the ruling National Congress Party, Ahmed Haroun, are among dozens of officials to be arrested, a top military official with direct knowledge of the situation told CNN.

Haroun, an aide to President Omar al-Bashir, has an ICC warrant for him.

Former defense minister Abdel Rehim Mohamed Hussein, former government minister and leading member of the National Congress Awad Al-Jaz and former vice presidents Berri Hassan Saleh and Ali Othman Taha, have also been arrested, the official said.

Military troops in the capital Khartoum stormed the Islamic Movement headquarters, part of the ruling party, on Thursday.
