United Legend Blasts Referee For Over Man City Penalty

Tottenham will now head to the second leg of the Champions League with an upper hand after an advantageous 1-0 win against Man City on Tuesday.

Mauricio Pocettino’s side weren’t favourites going into the first leg but take a lead into the return fixture thanks to Son Heung-min’s late strike.

With less than 15 minutes to play, the forward was played in behind City’s defence and managed to keep the ball in play before cutting back inside and firing a low shot into the net.

His goal sent fans inside Tottenham’s new stadium into hysteria to cap off a night that they won’t forget anytime soon.

Spurs arguably deserved the win as Pep Guardiola’s Man City failed to really get going throughout the game.

But Sergio Aguero did miss a golden opportunity for the visitors in the first half as he had a penalty saved by Hugo Lloris.

Many have suggested that justice was served by the save as the spot-kick was awarded in very controversial fashion.

Danny Rose was penalised for a handball inside the area, but that decision was only made after a VAR review.

At half-time, BT Sport pundits debated the referee’s call and came to the conclusion that there was barely any grounds for awarding a penalty.

Rio Ferdinand, in particular, blasted the use of the technology, claiming that the people making the calls ‘don’t understand football’.

“You need people in that box who have played the game,” the former Manchester United defender said on BT Sport.

“These people do not understand football. You need to have the people that understand football if they’re making these decisions.

“That is clear cut to me, it’s not a penalty.”

The decision clearly didn’t sit well with Ferdinand but his opinion will no doubt be one shared by many football fans.
