This season’s battle for the Premier League title is one of the fiercest in recent memories, with both Man City and Liverpool not ready to even draw a game but to win most.
The Reds currently sit two points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s men have the benefit of a game in hand at their disposal.
Liverpool last came within touching distance of the Premier League trophy during the 2013/14 season.
Brendan Rodgers’ team came agonisingly close to lifting their first league title in the Premier League era, though a crucial loss to Chelsea – featuring a certain infamous Steven Gerrard slip – stripped them of their opportunity.
One player who was crucial to Liverpool’s success during the campaign was striker Luis Suarez.
The Uruguayan formed a formidable striking partnership with Daniel Sturridge which was dubbed “SAS” at the time.
The pair tallied a whopping 52 goals between them that season, earning them both PFA Player of the Year nominations.
Suarez’s impressive displays ultimately earned him a big money move to Barcelona in the summer of 2014. But the Uruguayan was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal the previous summer.
However, Suarez’s former teammate Jamie Carragher has revealed he and Gerrard managed to convince him to stay for another year.
Carragher said: “We said you’re too good for Arsenal.
“If you’re going to move you’ve got to move to Barcelona.
“That’s what I’m saying with Eden Hazard as well. I think the best players in the world play for your Madrid’s and Barcelona’s and at this point, Chelsea
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed previously that a verbal agreement between Suarez and the club was agreed ahead of a move in 2013.
But Suarez, himself, has said it was the conversation he had with Carragher and Gerrard that made him stay at Anfield.
He said: “We qualified for the UEFA Europa League but the season ended badly.
“I was about to go to Arsenal, forcing myself to go, and Steven tells me, ‘I promise that if you stay this year you’re going to take off and next year you’ll go to Bayern, Barcelona, Real Madrid or whichever you want.’
“His words convinced me in that moment. They came from a person who cared for me, who wanted my well-being, who saw me suffer during training and saw me sad.
“They were words from a true captain that had an impact in that moment and helped me a lot.”
Since moving to Barca, Suarez has undoubtedly gone on to become one of the deadliest number nines in world football, helping the Catalan giants to a whopping 13 domestic trophies since his arrival.
Safe to say it was worth waiting that extra year.
