Life sentence for Kenyan student in India over rape case

A Kenyan student has been imprisoned for life after found guilty of raping a fellow Kenyan student in India in 2016.

Eric Mulinge Nethuli, 26, was studying Masters in Business Administration at a private college and was accused of raping a 22-year-old fellow student.

The victim, according to The Hindu newspaper, was raped in Mulinge house after he invited her for dinner.

The victim reported the matter at Ammapettai All Women Police Station.

The court also imposed a fine of Sh25,000 (17,500 rupees).

The court sentenced him to a six and a half years of imprisonment and life imprisonment, all to be served concurrently.

Early this year, Three men were jailed for 90 years each by an Eldoret court after they were found guilty of robbery with violence and defilement.

The trio, Isaac Maiyo Bett, Gilbert Manase Lime and Josphat Kipruto Bett, had been accused of violently robbing Ms Belinda Wamalwa of her items valued at Sh200,000 on July 3, 2016 at Bandari in Lugari Sub County, Kakamega .

Also Police this year arrested a Dutch national who defiled three girls aged eight, nine and 10 years in 2016.

Mr. Hans Egon Dieter Vriens, a Dutch national has been arrested in Kasarani, Nairobi by detectives from the Child Protection Unit and Transnational Organized Crime Unit. Mr. Hans Egon disappeared after allegedly committing the crime but the police have been searching for him in the past two years.

Rape in Kenya is estimated to have increased by 5,200% compared to 2007.

Kenya police statistics on the incidence of rape reported to the police indicate that 1,291 cases were reported in 2006 and 876 in 2007 nationally.

Rape is the most highly under-reported crime in Kenya. It is estimated that only 1 out of 20 women in Kenya will report rape and only 1 in 6 will seek medical assistance. Relying on reported cases will therefore not provide a genuine picture of what is truly happening on the ground.
