Radical surgery that Manchester United intends to make

This summer transfer window is set to be the busiest in Manchester United’s schedule in a long, long time.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now confirmed as permanent manager, the Norwegian has the arduous task of overhauling a squad that has shown a number of weaknesses in the last four games.

The honeymoon period is well and truly over for Solskjaer, with the negative characteristics seen under Jose Mourinho rearing their heads once again.

Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Wolves further highlighted the Red Devils’ weakness in defence, while the likes of Fred and Paul Pogba in midfield flattered to deceive.

Pogba’s future is still slightly up in the air, but it still remains unlikely that he will be sold given his positive relationship with Solskjaer.

So what are United’s transfer plans? Well, one English media have kindly provided all the details on potential incomings, outgoings and targets.

It is believed that Solskjaer is looking to bring in no fewer than five new signings in the summer. A right-back, a centre-half and a versatile forward are his top priorities.

If Ander Herrera and Juan Mata do move on after their contracts expire in the summer – which is expected – then Solskajer will look to reinforce the midfield as well.

In true United spirit, the new boss is also looking to promote a number of academy players to the first-team as part of the squad’s rebuild.

The Red Devils won’t be pursuing a goalkeeper as they have no intention of letting David de Gea leave, despite his ongoing contract debacle.

Including Herrera and Mata, five more senior names are being linked with an exit to free up funds for Solskjaer.

Alexis Sanchez will be sold if a team is willing to match his wages, while four defenders could be allowed to go in a serious shakeup.

Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly are all said to not be in Solskjaer’s plans for next season.

To cope with a potential defensive exodus, Raphael Varane, Kalidou Koulibaly and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are being monitored by the club.

Further up the pitch, Saul Niguez, Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Philippe Coutinho, Joao Felix, Declan Rice and Callum Hudson-Odoi are all named as targets by reports.
