It is understood that the uncertainty surrounding Champions League football for the Red Devils next season meant they could not decide their exact plans.

The news leaves Solskjaer at risk of being left behind in the transfer market as rivals clubs look to act early on targets being linked to Old Trafford. The Norwegian was appointed permanent manager on a three-year deal last week having enjoyed a successful spell since replacing Jose Mourinho in December.

Their top four hopes were dealt a blow with a defeat at Wolves in midweek, and the pressure is now on knowing a Champions League place would not only boost the budget by £60m but also help them attract their top targets. Borussia Dortmund Jadon Sancho has been heavily linked with a move to the club, along with fellow young English star Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Long-time target Kalidou Koulibaly is also still on the hit list, whilst rumours have suggested Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane could be a target if he decides to move on from the Bernabeu. It could be a huge summer for United as Solskjaer begins his rebuilding job, with question marks over first team players including Juan Mata and Ander Herrera with their contracts expiring soon.

If they do depart then Solskjaer could be given extra financial support to fund finding replacements. United are still battling for Champions League glory and they host Barcelona in their quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
