What causes depression? Kenyans discuss issues affecting them

World Health Organization (WHO) defines depression as a common mental disorder characterized by persistent sadness and loss of interest in activities you normally enjoy accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks.

Kenya was listed as the 6th most depressed nation in Africa according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The news on depression that has taken many lives through suicide has hit Kenyans to the core and Kenyans On Twitter (KOT) have shared their two cents.

What causes depression, makes you unhappy in Kenya?

But according to a study, some people get depressed through addiction to gaming.

About 76% of Kenyan youths are reported to be participating in betting industry which in the year 2018/2019, the companies made Ksh 200 billion.

Some youth invest their hard earned money on betting and end up losing them which in one way leads to depression.

Other KOT thinks that expectations from society make people depressed for they have to please the society in order to be ‘accepted’.

Does taking alcohol help ‘kill’ depression or it is just a way of pausing your problems for future?

From doctors’ perspective, it is believed that depression can attack anyone from all walks of life.

So depression can not be attributed to failures only but to what we go through on day to day lives.

If one has depression, it is good to seek assistance from anyone you trust or a psychiatrist.
