According to reports, Manchester United have entered the race to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.

Last month, reports claimed that Manchester City is closing in on a move for Saul, with Pep Guardiola viewing the 24-year-old as a long-term successor to Fernandinho.

But ESPN now reports that City is instead targeting Rodri Hernandez, who plays alongside Saul at Atletico.

And United are now preparing to make a move for Saul in the summer window as they view him as a ‘good fit’ to play alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side face the difficult task of convincing Atletico to lower their valuation as the Spanish club are demanding that his €150 million (£128m) release clause is met.

United are set to be in the market for a new central midfielder this summer as they face the prospect of losing Ander Herrera on a free transfer. Earlier this week, reports claimed that the Spanish midfielder has a pre-contract agreement with Paris Saint-Germain and will join the French champions in the summer.
