EACC on the hunt for Dirty Politicians over Sh2 billion Mall Scandal

Arguably the biggest in western Kenya, Lake Basin Mall is set to transform the economy of Kisumu which is recovering after a stormy political season and revamp the shopping experience in Western Kenya.

Already, the construction of the mall which is located at the Mamboleo junction along the Kisumu-Kakamega road attracted massive developments in the area with investments in real estate and supplies coming up.

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is on the verge of arresting senior government officials mentioned in an alleged loss of Sh. 2 billion in the construction of the Lake Basin Mall, Kisumu.

The politicians, who hail from both the government and opposition, reportedly syphoned funds meant for the project using underhand tactics. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has been put to task to into the files of the accused before an action is taken against them with immediate effect. 

The suspects include lawyers, top politicians in the country and Lake Victoria Basin Development Authority (LBDA) managers. Sources privy to Standard indicate that the anti-graft body has narrowed down the probe to 37 persons.

The sleuths from the commission want to establish why the cost rose from Sh2.6 billion to Sh4.6 billion.  The detectives also want to find out why the firm decided to take a loan of Sh2.5 billion from Co-operative Bank Legal Adviser. 

“The file is with the legal department. The legal team is perusing the list and will guide on its final cut,” revealed the official. The investigations come at a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured Kenyans of his commitment to ending the vice before he leaves office in 2022.

Measuring about 60,000 square feet, the five-floor mega investment has about 140 shops, a three-star hotel, showrooms, and a parking area that can accommodate 335 cars.
