OUTSIDERS: Nuno’s Wolves hit the brakes on Man United from leapfroging Arsenal and Spurs into third position

Nuno Santo’s, Wolves came from behind to put a serious dent in visiting Manchester United’s top four hopes with a 2-1 win at Molineux.

Scott McTominay gave the visitors the lead when he drilled a fine effort in from 25 yards in what was his first goal for the club.

Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku missed golden chances to double United’s lead but were denied at point-blank range by Rui Patricio.

Wolves’ equaliser came when Fred was dispossessed midway through his own half after 25 minutes played and Raul Jiminez slipped in Jota to fire past David De Gea.

The hosts controlled the rest of the half but the two teams were level at the interval. United rediscovered their intensity after the break but Ashley Young’s second yellow reduced the visitors to ten men with half an hour to play.

Wolves were happy to sit back and hit United on the counter-attack and they found a winner thanks to a huge slice of luck 15 minutes from time.

Leander Dendoncker connected with a cross into the box and confusion between De Gea and Chris Smalling led to the defender scoring an unfortunate own goal.

It means United miss the opportunity to leapfrog Arsenal and Spurs into third and are now outsiders for the top four.
