KNH blows to pressure releases detained patients

Kenyatta National Hospital has finally succumbs to pressure and agree to release 250 patients that had been detained over unpaid bills.

This comes shortly after an uproar from a section of Kenyans after a report from the Ministry of Health revealed that the referral hospital had been detaining 184 patients and 387 bodies over Ksh 6 billion debt.

KNH, through a statement revealed that the function would be held on Tuesday at Administration Block Parking Area.

“The Board of Management of Kenyatta National Hospital has taken a decision to release 250 patients,” The Star quoted a statement from KNH.

According to Health Principal Secretary Susan Mochache, over 300 patients were being detained in hospitals countrywide over non-payment.

Earlier reports indicated that a total of Ksh 5,692,834,284 was owed to the national hospital.

The Ministry addressed the accumulation of patient bills in hospitals, asking relevant hospitals to waiver the arrears or enter into a credit facility.

Other hospitals detaining patients are Kakamega Referral Hospital with a total of 56 patients and Nakuru County Referral Hospital with 15 patients.

Kakamega Referral Hospital is owed Ksh3 million while Nakuru County Referral Hospital is owed Ksh 850,780.K

It was earlier reported that a woman was forced to part with her newborn child after she was detained for failing to settle a Ksh  53,000  bills.

Wanjiru is only one of 20 women detained having suffered from birth-related complications with some separated from their newborn babies.
