The Gunners beat Newcastle 2-0 on Monday night to leapfrog arch-rivals Tottenham and move into the top four.
Goals from Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette guided Unai Emery’s men past the Toon.
And after the crucial win, Arsenal star Ozil was quizzed on the importance of the win.
When asked about overtaking Spurs and moving into third, Arsenal’s man of the match smiled, then said: “Our aim is to be in the top four so of course we are happy to be in front of Tottenham.
“You know [laughing]… there’s always competition with them.
“We have a few more games in front of us and we want to win them. We want to take all the points to get into the top four at the end of the season.”
Arsenal fans took to social media to hail the German following his comments about their arch rivals.
One fan wrote on Twitter: “Mesut just said he’s happy that we’re above Tottenham. He’s a Gooner. Proper Gooner. I love him. I truly love Mesut Ozil. What a great performance tonight.”
Another added: “That grin from Ozil when the interviewer said now 3rd… above Tottenham… He knows! #ARSNEW.”
“Lol Mesut Ozil can’t help but laugh when talking about being above Tottenham,” a fellow supporter added.
Another Gunners fan said: “‘Of course we are always happy when we are in front of Tottenham.’
“Mesut Ozil repaying the Arsenal fans for singing his name after his substitution, there.”
Ozil has struggled to cement a place in Emery’s starting line-up this season due to inconsistent form.
However, the playmaker insists he’s ready to keep performing and force his way into Emery’s plans.
“My job is to give everything on the pitch, like I did today,” Ozil said.
“I just want to help my team-mates win the game. We played well as a team and now we are third. We are happy with this.”
