A joint parliamentary security committee has approved the nomination of Hillary Mutyambai as Inspector General of Police. The report will be debated in the House on Wednesday.
Appearing before the joint committees on Administration and National Security of the National Assembly and that on Defence and Foreign Relations of the Senate on Thursday, Mutyambai said he will tame rogue police officers and perpetrators of extrajudicial killings.
βI will be practical in dealing with this. Many have come before me, found corruption and other vices within the service, and left. I will make a difference through leadership by integrity,β he told the lawmakers.
Mr. Mutyambai was nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta some two weeks ago to replace Mr. Joseph Boinnet whose four-year non-renewable term ended mid this month.
On Wednesday, Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale urged the MPs to observe the strict timelines provided for in the vetting of the IG nominee under the Public Appointments (Parliamentary) Approval Act.
βIt is important that Parliament vets the nominee within the timeline provided before this House goes on recess,β Mr Duale said.
