A former nominated member of the Embu County Assembly has distanced herself from allegations that she was involved in the kidnapping of a man in Kirinyaga county. Teresia Njeri who was arrested on Saturday, March 30, for alleged abduction of a 22-year-old man at Makutano Trading Centre defended herself saying she only rescued the man from an angry mob that was baying for his blood over alleged crime.

Njeri also refuted allegations that she was holding hostage the allegedly kidnapped man at her house, claiming she took the man in for his own safety after the rescue and then immediately informed his family to come for him. “We rescued the man and we made sure he was safe. I rang his father who lives at Igembe in Meru and asked him to come for his son. The father called at around 4am and told me he had arrived at the village.

I then sent out four people, among them my daughter, to meet him at a nearby road, but to my surprise he was accompanied by police officers,” the ex-MCA narrated as quoted by Citizen Digital.

According to Njeri, the police opened fire on the four people she had sent to meet the father of the allegedly kidnapped man and in the process, shot and injured two of them including her daughter. The police officers, she said, then proceeded to her house, arrested her and took her to Makutano Police Station. The former MCA was later freed on a KSh 10,000 cash bail awaiting arraignment.

She denied the kidnapping charges levelled against her and accused the police of trying to frame her for a crime she did not commit. The police had reportedly alleged the people Nyeri had sent were armed with machetes and that is why they opened fire on them.
