Dozens of people perished in a rainstorm that swept through southern Nepal.

Many of those killed were hit by flying objects such as trees, and the death toll is expected to rise, authorities say.

The country’s prime minister Khadga Prasad Oli said 25 people had died and 400 were injured in the storm on Sunday.

On Twitter, he offered condolences to those affected.

Among the areas hit were villages in the Bara district, which is about 75 miles south of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu.

Government administrator Rajesh Poudel said that many of the dead were killed by flying objects, falling trees and huts.

The number of deaths is expected to rise, he added.

Rescue helicopters and crews are waiting for the weather to improve before moving the injured from some of the villages, while police and army rescuers are trying to reach others.

Many roads have been blocked by fallen trees and power poles.
