Manchester United announced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager on Thursday and many fans are expecting the manager to make lots of quality signing in the summer, but the Norwegian manager has said he will take careful approach to summer recruitment as the new Red Devils’ boss, he vowed not to waste millions in the transfer market.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has promised not to waste Manchester United’s millions in the transfer market this summer. Solskjaer is planning for the future at Old Trafford after being confirmed as the club’s full-time manager and knows he will have a substantial budget to buy new players.
It is understood that right-back and central midfield are the two areas where United are most keen to strengthen, although they could also sign a winger if the right deal is available. United have already been linked with £100m deals for the likes of Borussia Dortmund wide man Jadon Sancho, Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez and Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
However, Solskjaer insists he will not spend money for the sake of it after completing his return to Old Trafford from Molde where his transfer fund was significantly smaller. He said: ‘United is a club that has money, and that has to be spent in a reasonable way. People who know me, know that I will use that in a good way.
‘We have a plan with the club. They have scouted players for longer than I have been here, and we have players that we need to keep. We will not spend money just to spend money.’ United remain in contract talks with their Spanish trio of Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and David de Gea.
Herrera has interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal as he moves closer to becoming a free agent at the end of the season, and Solskjaer is hopeful the club can reach a compromise with the player’s representatives over his £150,000-a-week wage demands.
‘Ander has been very good since I came in and we want the best players in this club,’ added the United boss. ‘Let’s hope the club and player find an agreement. We will have a strong squad next season.’ As he prepared for his first game as permanent manager at home to Watford on Saturday, Solskjaer allowed himself to look beyond a new three-year contract to the possibility that he could stay in charge of United for the long-term.
‘When I came here as a player I lasted for 11 years, something I had never dreamed of. This time I was going to stay for six months but now I have the possibility to stay for three more years. You never know in football, and I will do my best to make sure it will be longer than that. We are a different club than everyone else. We’re unique. It’s a special club and I feel that, of course. I feel my heart is beating quicker, more eager to get on with it and show I’m worthy of the job,’ he said.
