The weekend is finally here and counting a few weeks into Easter how about if we looked into a few simple ways of planning a getaway. The holiday season for the kids is also about to kick in, which means most of us are dealing with a jam-packed calendar and a
And while it’s undoubtedly the most wonderful time of them, it can sure be a stressful one as well. So, in the case that you’re in need of some time to unwind and don’t have any major commitments, we’ve pulled together five ideas for last-minute weekend getaways to give you some time to relax and decompress from the holiday hullabaloo.
- The Staycation:
Sometimes the best way to spend a weekend getaway is in your own country. (Hey, bonus points for no travel time.) Grab your favorite girlfriends and show in a room in a chic hotel (Like Fairmount Hotel, Nanyuki, it’s my favorite!) and spend a few days indulging in the best your country has to offer.
Have a nyama choma lunch, walk to that new museum you’ve been dying to check out, schedule a massage or manicure and grab cocktails or dinner at a trendy spot.
- The Off-Season Beach Trip:
Sure everyone is likely to spend a weekend at the beach soaking up the summer sun but spending a weekend in the off-season will be an entirely different experience (Diani, Watamu, Mombasa maybe?).
Rent a beach house or shack up in a bed and breakfast and spend a few days with a good book, bundled up walks on the beach and board games to make the most of the relaxing beach vibes. (Turtle Bay,
- The City Trip:
Cities have a certain buzz and energy to them and the convenience of mass transit and variety of things to do within one area make them a great choice for a weekend getaway. If you live in a suburb or small town, give a new destination a try! Spend some time wandering around and experiencing life as a local (but don’t forget to sneak in a touristy activity or two!)
- The Hike Trip:
Whether you’re a pro or first timer, hitting the slopes is a festive activity that’s a ton of fun and a great workout as well. Most mountains have stay packages perfect for weekends where you’ll be able to easily secure both your tickets and a cozy place to warm up and rest after spending the day in the mountain.
- The Road Trip:
A good old fashioned road trip can be a lot of fun! Pack the car with a few friends, some snacks and your latest playlists and a map and hit the road. Whether you’ve got a specific end destination in mind or just want to get out and explore, be sure to stop along the way and take the time to explore any restaurants, shops or parks that sound cool. You never know what you’ll find out on the open road!
No matter where you end up on your weekend getaway, keep one thing in mind: this should be a time to relax! Don’t stress the details and feel the need to cram every possible activity into your weekend it’s okay to just go with the flow, we promise.
