According to the British Media, Unai Emery has identified five targets including Barcelona and Bayern Munich stars as he attempts to reshuffle his underachieving squad next season.

The Gunners are set to lose Aaron Ramsey this season to Serie A side Juventus while there have been rumours Emery is willing to sell Henri Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil in order to free up the club’s wage bill.

The club is also expected to sign deadwoods such as Danny Welbeck, Mohamed Eleny and shkodran Mustafi which leave the team short in most areas. Emery replaced Arsene Wenger last summer has now decided on the five players that will make the team to compete at the highest level.

According to the Independent, Arsenal are interested in sigining Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti and Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.  Umtiti is said to be considering his future at Barcelona and the club are also willing to sell provided they receive the right offer.

Bayern Munich’s David Alaba is also another defender who could be available after the Bundesliga champions signed Luca Hernandez from Atletico Madrid.  The club want to bring in up to five signings in the close-season to set up Unai Emery for a title challenge, and the feeling is deals can be done for both, who would represent significant coups.

Although Alaba and Umtiti have been influential starters for the respective clubs – Bayern Munich and Barcelona – over the last few seasons, changed circumstances would mean both are at least willing to look at the possibility of deals.

Bayern are in the process of a huge overhaul of their squad for next season, with an expected outlay of around €300m, but that will necessitate a clear-out of some long-term fixtures.

Alaba would not be close to the top of the list for potential exits, but there is a sense the German club would be open to talks. The Austrian himself recently talked up his boyhood support for Arsenal. They could however face competition from Barcelona.

The Catalans themselves are looking to drastically reduce their wage bill, while bringing in Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax. Umtiti has meanwhile found himself forced out of the side by the form of Clement Lenglet. Emery sees centre-half as a priority area to improve.

Nevertheless, Arsenal will need to sell before they can buy these players after it was revealed Emery will be given limited funds to spend in the summer window.
