Mombasa county rolls out free seeds & fertilizer distribution to empower farmers

In their continued endeavor to empower farmers in Mombasa for Food & Nutrition security, Mombasa County through the Department of Agriculture, Livestock & Cooperatives has rolled out another round of
free seeds & fertilizer distribution to farmers in the county.

Yesterday, more than 500 farmers from Kisauni Sub County benefitted from the distribution of 200 bags of fertilizer, a total of 267 bales of maize seeds in the variety of PH1, PH4 & cow peas as well as other assorted horticulture seeds.

Agriculture, Livestock Fisheries & Cooperatives Executive Hassan Mwamtoa alongside the Sub County Administration and other leaders led the exercise at Mwakiruge Chief’s camp.

The distribution of the seeds and fertilizer is also set to continue in the remaining sub counties in subsequent weeks.

This moves comes in the midst of the ongoing drought that has affected some parts of the country.

Other counties that have taken up similar initiatives include Machakos county.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua

Over 40 tonnes of seeds were to be distributed across the County with a special bias towards the less privileged and orphans in every ward.

The seed distribution project is part of the county’s extensive agricultural program for food security in Machakos County, to ensure that they  no longer feature in the list of Counties receiving food aid (mwolyo) from donors or the National government.

Other Interventions that the county has invested in include providing subsidized fertilizers, tilling tractors for every ward, digging and equipping boreholes, quality extension services to the farmers, distribution of day old chicks and the green house program.

The Machakos Governor noted that the plan to ensure Kenyans don’t die from hunger must be strategic by focusing more and empowering the poor.
