Man arrested over disgusting attack on Liverpool legend

A man has been arrested in connection with a sickening attack on Liverpool FC legend Gary McAllister.

The former midfielder was rushed to hospital after being punched in the face outside a Leeds city centre bar on Sunday, March 24.

The ex-Scottish international  was on a night out when the ferocious attack took place just hours after he watched Liverpool Legends play at Anfield on Saturday.

The 54-year-old lost three teeth and had plastic surgery on his lip which needed 12 stitches according to former teammate Dominic Matteo

Now West Yorkshire Police say they have made an arrest in connection with the attack.

A spokesman said: “Police have arrested a man in connection with an assault which happened in Leeds city centre last weekend.

“The male victim was stood outside a bar when a man approached him and punched him in the face causing injuries that required hospital treatment.

“A 32-year-old male was arrested last night (28 March) in connection with this incident.


He has been released under investigation and enquiries remain ongoing.”

Liverpool fans have rallied around former Reds player sending him their well wishes.

“Speedy recovery Gary , great footballer”

Fans praised the former player as a “nice bloke” and blasted his attack as “disgusting”.

One wrote:”Absolute disgusting, this lad payed his respects at my uncles funeral the great Tommy Lawrence which I thought was a wonderful gesture, nice bloke too. Shameful this is, hope you’re ok Gary x”

Mr McAllister has worked alongside Steven Gerrard as the assistant manager at Rangers since the former Liverpool captain was appointed in 2018.

The Scot played for Liverpool under Gérard Houllier from 2000-2002, playing in the team that won the treble in the 2000-01 season and was instrumental in his side clinching the UEFA Cup that year.
