Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intends to move his family over to England in the summer now he has been appointed the Manchester United manager on a permanent basis.

The MEN understands Solskjaer agreed a six-month lease on an apartment in Hale last month since his Alderley Edge home is currently being rented by Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. Earlier this month, Solskjaer joked he would evict Van Dijk but the likelihood is he will move into his family home in the summer so his children can finish their school year in Norway. Solskjaer and his wife Silje have three children – Noah, 18, daughter Karna, 15, and Elijah, 10.

Solskjaer, who joined United as a player for £1.5million in 1996, described Noah as a ‘proper Manc’ as a consequence of the family living in England for 14-and-a-half years. Solskjaer left United to manage Molde in December 2010 but on Thursday morning the club confirmed his full-time managerial status on a three-year contract.

“We’ve really enjoyed the last eight years in Norway,” Solskjaer said. “Living there, it’s going to be a change for them but we’re looking forward to it.

“These three months, or six months, we agreed we’d do it separately as a family as there wasn’t any need to move them over [in case he returned to Molde]. That’s gone now, we’ll be moving over together.

“We built a house, or I started it, in 2007, finally maybe in 2019 we can move into it. That’s a lot of planning.” Solskjaer demolished a £1.8m cottage to make way for an ‘eco-pad’ 12 years ago.

In his statement, Solskjaer said: “From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club. It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here.

“The last few months have been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for the work we’ve done so far. This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve.”

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward added: “Since coming in as Caretaker Manager in December, the results Ole has delivered speak for themselves.

“More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club. This all means that he is the right person to take Manchester United forward.

“I want to thank Ole and the coaching team for everything they have done so far and congratulate him on this richly deserved appointment. The fans and everyone at the club are behind him as he looks to take us where we need to be and build the next stage of our history.”
