The 2019 Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize champion Peter Tabichi’s humility is beyond reproach.

On disembarking from the airplane on Wednesday, the 36 year old award winner went down and kissed the earth.

Kissing airport grounds is a very common tradition with world leaders and world’s top achievers – More so the Popes.

Bro Peter being a staunch member of the Franciscan religious order, shocked many people by this humble gesture.

What is the reason behind this old tradition?

According to Brother Peter, he revealed that he kissed the airport ground because it is a gesture of patriotism and he is proud of his motherland, Kenya.

I was so happy that where I come from has made me rise to where I am,” stated Bro Peter.

The act of kissing the ground of a country one has just set foot upon, whether done by the pope or any other world leader, is not superstitious.

It’s merely a way of expressing love and respect for the country and its people.

On 6th May 1980 Pope John Paul II kissed JKIA ground during his maiden visit to Kenya.

Pope John Paul II also laid prostrate at Khartoum Airport upon arrival on a visit to Sudan in February 10, 1993.
