Corruption in Kenya drives rise in Human trafficking

Kenya we flagged as a source, transit, and destination country for persons subjected to forced labour and sex trafficking in East Africa by the Trafficking in Persons.

We continue to host illegal recruiters who maintain networks in Uganda and Ethiopia.

They recruit Kenyan, Rwandan, Ethiopian and Ugandan workers through fraudulent offers of employment in the Middle East and Asia.

This happens despite a directive by the government to register all agencies linking Kenyans to employment opportunities overseas.

Today Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives have rescued 25 female hostages of Burundian nationality who were being held in a house in Gwa Kairu Area, Kiambu County.

According to DCI, the women were being held as their captors planned to traffic them to various countries in Asia.

Women rescued from human trafficking

Detectives identified the owner of the house as one Mr Nicholas Mugambi Waigwa.

Detectives from the Transnational Organized Crime unit raided the home after they were tipped off about the activities at the house.

“The victims-all aged between 24 years and 33 years-were being held hostage at the said home in Gwa-Kairu area in Kiambu County pending transit to Asian countries,” a statement from the DCI disclosed.

They further disclosed that Mr Mugambi may have been working together with other suspects who were arrested.

Three ladies, Mercy Kaaia, Lydia Wairimu and Susan Nyambura Nganga, have been identified as the suspects believed to be running the human trafficking ring.

The Anti-Human trafficking police have vowed to fight cross border human trafficking in neighbouring Kenya after several cases were tracked down in that country, recently. Since the year began at least 92 Ugandans have been intercepted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in the process of being trafficked out of the region.
