“We need to be honest with our sons and daughters and tell them the truth, that some of the courses they are studying will never get them jobs.

“I have always asked myself the relevance of one studying a course in political science when all we know that everyone can ask for votes and get elected,” he said.

In February this year, the Commission for University Education (CUE) noted that 133 university programmes with an overall enrolment capacity of 10,000 slots were useless.

The regulatory body stated that some institutions offered duplicate programmes while others offered programmes which were above their capacity.

CUE chief executive Prof Mwenda Ntarangwi, however, stated that there was no need for panic because some of the universities did not submit the relevant documents but the body was following up on that.

“Some were not submitted to CUE and in others, we used feedback received from universities about their capacities. We used our standards and calculated capacities for programmes against the information the universities declared,” said Ntarangwi.
