Tension is rising among Moi University, Nairobi Campus students over a looming close down of their campus.
This is after reports emerged that Moi University is planning to relocate students from its Nairobi Campus on Moi Avenue to its main campus in Eldoret starting next semester.
According to Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics, Research and Extension) Prof Isaac Kimengi, the move is aimed at cutting university costs due to the drop in the number of students.
He added that the decision to relocate the students was arrived at during the 282th regular Senate meeting on March 20.
Internal sources reveal that the university has already surrendered several floors at it’s Bazaar building over inability to pay rent.
Students are now worried that the move is a plot to privately transfer students to the main campus before finally closing down the Nairobi Campus.
“There is panic and confusion. We don’t know what is happening, and like you know these people never tell the truth.” A Nairobi Campus student said
The student further indicated that there is a possibility that students will be moved to the main campus in small numbers before the final close down. To worsen the state, a senior lecturer based at the main campus indicated that the university is facing a cash crisis
The move comes after the eldoret based university closed down some of its satellite campuses in Kericho, Kitale, Yala an another in Eldoret town. The institution now has three main campuses operating, Main Campus in Kesses, Eldoret West Campus and Mombasa Campus.
