Turkana Governor seeks a long term solution to mitigate water challenges

Turkana County Governor Josphat Nanok highlighted the county’s efforts in mitigating the water challenges in his county.

Turkana is one of the county’s that is currently faced with drought and the Governor says that they  are taking up initiatives in the efforts of achieving water sufficiency.

Nanok says that as part of ongoing drought response in the water sector the County Government is carrying out water trucking to communities in water stress, equipping and upgrading high yielding boreholes, desilting pans and rock water catchment

“In the long term, we are carrying out feasibility surveys for dams in Lokwanamor, Kadokorinyang, Lomelo and Kalemng’orok. Solution for water challenges in Turkana is the investment in mega water harvesting infrastructure” he added

The Governor gave these remarks during the World Water day celebrations on 22nd March in Nakukulas, Turkana East Sub County.

He also inspected the implementation of the Nakukulas Reticulation water project, a partnership between the County Government and Tullow oil Kenya which will serve the Pastoral community in the area

Josphat Nanok says that achieving water sufficiency is the key to realization of the Big Four Agenda of food security in the ASALs counties.

He also reiterated that these investments in mega water projects will only be achieved with support from the National Government and other partners.

In line to the response to drought, as of March 22nd, the County Government was concluding the first phase of relief food distribution programme that targeted 805,000 residents experiencing food stress across the county.
