And it potentially leaves former forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with no experienced frontman available for the visit of Watford.

Javi Gracia’s Europa League-chasing Hornets travel to Old Trafford next Saturday.

Manchester United cannot afford any slip ups against eighth-placed Watford with the race for Champions League qualification as tight as ever.

The Red Devils sit fifth, two points behind Arsenal and three off of Tottenham.

The Gunners host Newcastle on the Monday, April 1 while Spurs travel to Liverpool the day after United’s clash.

It means a win on March 30 over Watford would see United go fourth and level with Tottenham, who have a superior goal difference.

But goals may be hard to come by at Old Trafford, given United could now be without Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial.

Lukaku was sent home by Belgium this week after having a scan on his foot for an injury sustained back when United beat PSG at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League.

He is said to have aggravated it in the defeat at Arsenal a fortnight ago, which meant he sat out Saturday night’s FA Cup loss at Wolves.

Sanchez remains sidelined with knee ligament damage and may not return this season, while Rashford was sent home too by England yesterday as Gareth Southgate confirmed he was unavailable to play either tonight or Monday.

Martial returned early from international duty with France as well due to ‘recurring problems in his right knee’.

So who does Solskjaer now have left to line up with against Watford?

Jesse Lingard

There are two unique options available to the interim manager in what could prove to be an experimental afternoon for United next Saturday.

There is the potential of Jesse Lingard starting in a ‘false 9’ role, as he is the only senior attacker fit.

The versatile 26-year-old forward is in Dubai working on his fitness as he looks to get back to 100 per cent following a spell out, having returned to action in the 2-1 Wolves defeat where he played 86 minutes.

Alternatively, academy product Mason Greenwood could get his first senior start for United as he aims to follow in Rashford’s footsteps.

The 17-year-old England youth international made his first-team debut as a substitute away to PSG earlier this month, and he then came off the bench on 80 minutes at Arsenal in the 2-0 Premier League defeat.

He is the only natural choice to start as striker at present, with Solskjaer left hoping one of his star forwards recovers quickly.

In terms of those acting as support in attack, too, Juan Mata is expected to play as one of Solskjaer’s front three if he sticks with his preferred 4-3-3 formation, while Dutch winger Tahith Chong could also be pushing for a first start.
