I honestly think the government is taking us for a big ride. The DP, in a press address on Monday, said the government had released Ksh.2 billion for the supply of food and water to about 1.1 million Kenyans affected by the ongoing drought, adding that there should be no cause for alarm.

Suba South Member of Parliament John Mbadi on Tuesday lashed out at Deputy President William Ruto over his remarks that the government is in control of the drought situation in the country.

Mr. Mbadi, however, says the government “lost control way back” and that he (Ruto) should “just admit it and tell us what you intend to do. “The Deputy President, with all due respect, should apologise to Kenyans and tell us what the government is intending to do to provide food in this country,” said the MP.

“It is not a matter of appearing on television and telling us ‘the government is in control.’ Control of what? How can you be in control and people are dying?”

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Chairman spoke in Parliament during the afternoon proceedings on the current drought situation in the country where at least 21 people have been reported dead.

He also termed as a shame the government’s assertion that no person has died due to effects of the current drought. “It was a shame yesterday when I saw the leadership of this country say that no one has died as a result of drought; that is a big lie. When you see practical pictures coming from the ground from these countries, it leaves no doubt that Kenyans are actually dying,” said Mr. Mbadi.

“So there is no need to deny the leaders. We need to accept if we were a responsible leadership, we need to own up and apologize that we have failed in our responsibility as leaders.”

The minority leader in the national assembly further hit out at the Turkana County leadership led by Governor Josephat Nanok for allegedly failing to use funds allocated to them to feed their people.

According to the outspoken leader, the country has “white collar murderers” who allegedly use money allocated to take care of irrigation and build dams to “develop private property.”

“Turkana County receives Ksh.11 billion per year, and then I saw the governor last evening,he’s not even ashamed to appear on television to tell us that he’s not able to give his people water,” stated Mr. Mbadi. Do you think its fair what Ruto did? Telling us that there was no drought when people were dying?
